Three Elephants

The Most Obvious Problems    with the Official 9/11 Story

Note:  The following text (Writing 9) discusses some of the problems with the official story of 911.  It is an expansion of the first section of "Some Elephants Missing", a pamphlet with three sections (Writing 10) which follows this essay.

A story that is true is true throughout. If even one significant element can be shown to be implausible, doubt is cast on the whole story.  If, in looking at the evidence, multiple elements seem unlikely, then the story has almost certainly been invented. That principle underlies this essay.

Many pieces of the government's 911 narrative require technical knowledge beyond that of almost everyone, and that general lack of expertise interferes with an accurate public appraisal of what happened. To make matters worse, because the events of that day are clearly an attack on America and Americans, mainstream media wants to support the American government--and the corporate profits contingent upon that support--more than it wants to report the truth. (A prominent example: PBS presented two separate and somewhat contradictory programs ostensibly intended to explain how the World Trade Center buildings collapsed on 9/11/01.  In two hours on that subject PBS chose to never mention that a third WTC building collapsed on 9/11/01, a building that shared none of the unique structural elements that PBS explained were central to the collapse of buildings 1 and 2.  And, far from being unimportant, the third building was larger, in total square feet, than any highrise on the west coast.  According to the official story, it was the first and only highrise in the history of construction to collapse due solely to fire.)  American media, therefore, does its best to confuse things by ignoring unhelpful evidence and uncritically repeating the government's narrative. But some events of 911 are so large, so open to examination, and so incompatible with the official story that they cannot be convincingly covered up or explained away. Though there are thousands of problems with the government's testimony, this essay looks at just three problems, the most conspicuous ones, the elephants.

Two of the three items involve Boeing 757's, or more precisely, the absence of Boeing 757's, the aircraft pictured to the left (and above). The 757 is 155 feet long, 125 feet wide, 45 feet high, its two engines are 45 feet apart.  It weighs 127 tons at takeoff and carries 186 passengers.  According to the official story, two Boeing 757's crashed within hours of each other on 9/11, one in Pennsylvania and one in Virginia (the planes that crashed into the WTC buildings were allegedly 767's). The government argues they crashed in such a way that, unlike every other plane crash on dry land in history, both completely disappeared forever.

The third problem concerns the collapse of World Trade Center 7.  It was not hit by a plane. It suffered only minor exterior damage and several very small and unexplained fires burned inside for an unknown period of time.  It would seem that a credible explanation of its collapse--other than by controlled demolition--would require a suspension of disbelief. For that reason, the 9/11 Commission chose to ignore WTC7, saying its collapse was not a direct result of the terrorist attacks.  Similarly, the corporate media (actually all media) pretend that WTC7 either didn't happen or that it is not worth talking about. Few Americans have ever seen a photo of the building (except for the day of 9/11, it has never been shown on TV) and most Americans, if they have heard of WTC7 at all, believe that it must have been a small and unimportant structure that partially collapsed as a result of pieces of "the towers" falling on top of it.  But, contrary to those assumptions, it was itself a tower, massive, immensely important, and too large and too far from WTC 1 and 2 for anything from those structures to have caused its collapse by falling on it.  And it collapsed completely, decisively, all at once, straight down, just like the other two towers that day. It was the third high-rise tower in the history of the built environment to collapse due to random structural failure (all on 9/11) and the first to collapse solely due to fire.  It fell in the heart of Manhattan. Had it crashed to the ground on any day other than 9/11, everyone would have seen the videos of its fall countless times and structural engineers would still be trying to understand the event. Either the world's fire codes would have to be radically revised or, following the other conclusion, people everywhere would be demanding that the perpetrators of the demolition be bought to justice. But 9/11 provides cover for the catastrophic end of WTC7 and so, against all odds, relatively few know about it.

1  The Disappearance of United Flight 93.

The official story maintains that United Flight 93, a Boeing 757, left Newark at 8:01 on the morning of 9/11, flew west to Cleveland where it turned east, and at 10:03 am crashed in a field in southwestern Pennsylvania.  The photo above shows the field soon after the alleged crash.  The government says that the roughly circular crater in the left half of the photo was created by the impact of the Fight 93.  The crater, about 30 feet in diameter and about 15 feet deep, occupies the exact center of an abandoned coal strip mine.  The photo to the left shows the crater (in the shadow, center of photo) with the strip mine furrow to its left and right.  The road sign at the far right of the photo provides some sense of scale.

Three problems with these pictures:

1. the hole seems to be the only area of the field that is affected and it's much too small to accommodate a 757 (125 foot wingspan, engines 45 feet apart),

2. the hole is round--it looks like it was made by an explosive charge placed at the center of the strip mine; it is not at all what one might expect to see at the crash site of a very large passenger plane,

3. and, most significantly, there is no plane--there is no fuselage, no wings, no engines, no tail section, no wreckage at all, no baggage, no passengers.

In the photo above, the rescue workers are standing around, they have nothing to do, there is nothing plane-like to investigate, no fire to extinguish, no passengers to rescue, no bodies to recover. According to the official story, Flight 93 burrowed through this small crater into the coal field and disappeared completely.  Or, alternatively, it is suggested that the debris is scattered over an area of maybe eight square miles, as might happen when a plane explodes during flight.  This plane did not explode in the air but allegedly crashed into the ground.  According to the evidence, however, those responsible for creating the appearance of a plane crash on this site failed miserably as, it is obvious, no 757 crashed here.  The photo at left shows the crash site of a real (not imaginary) commercial airliner.  Notice that, unlike the empty field pictured above, it contains the wrecked shell of an airliner, many large pieces of debris and, of course, the bodies of the passengers (this is typical of all crashed passenger planes, except those in Pennsylvania and Virginia on 9/11).

Quote.  Somerset County Coroner Wally Miller, among the first to arrive after the alleged crash: "This is the most eerie thing. I have not, to this day, seen a single drop of blood. Not a drop. I stopped being coroner after about 20 minutes, because there were no bodies there. There was just nothing visible. It was the strangest feeling. [The crater looked] like someone took a scrap truck, dug a 10-foot ditch and dumped all this trash into it."

Quote.  Ernie Stull, Mayor of the nearby village of Shanksville: "Well...there was no plane. There was what you see a hole...about 6 meters deep...and that was all there was."

2   The Disappearance of American Flight 77.

The photo above was taken soon after the alleged crash of Flight 77 at 9:37 am, but before the collapse of this section of Pentagon wall at 10:10 am.  For the first 33 minutes after the initial event, the only large opening in the facade is about 15 feet square (inside the drawn circle) with what looks like a column still dividing the opening in half. Arrows point to unbroken windows immediately above the opening.  Above the circle and the arrows, the parapet is sagging slightly (this is the area that would eventually collapse), but the openings in the facade are all quite small and rectangular; the facade is substantially intact.  No passenger plane has impacted this facade and disappeared inside; nor does a plane exist in front of the facade or on the lawn.

Apparently, explosives were supposed to destroy this facade as the plane flew just above. The initial well-timed explosions and fireball succeeded in creating the illusion of an impact, but they failed to bring down the facade.  A second round of explosions a half-hour later caused the collapse of a triangular section of this elevation (photo at left).  Almost all published images of the 9/11 Pentagon are photos taken after the collapse, suggesting that the plane entered the building through that opening (although even that opening is way too small to accommodate a 757 and, looking into that opening, it is clear that no plane is inside).  The earlier photos offer dramatic testimony that no plane crashed on this site.  The hiding of photographs from before the facade collapse is a crucial part of the government's deception and the collusion of corporate media, in not showing the early photos, makes the government's lies possible (though only to a high credulous audience, since even after the facade collapse there is no plausible explanation for the absence of the alleged plane)

Quote.  James McIntyre, CNN's chief Pentagon correspondent: "From my close-up inspection there is no evidence of a plane having crashed anywhere near the Pentagon...The only pieces left you can see are small enough that you can pick up in your hand. There are no large tail sections, wing sections, fuselage, nothing like that anywhere around that would indicate that the entire plane crashed into the side of the Pentagon..."

Quote.  Don Perkal, Deputy General Counsel, Washington Headquarters Services, Office of the Secretary of Defense: "Even before stepping outside I could smell the cordite. Then I knew explosives had been set off somewhere. Two explosions, a few minutes apart, prompted me to start walking."

Quote.  Gilah Goldsmith, personnel attorney at the Pentagon: "We saw a huge black cloud of smoke," she said, saying it smelled like cordite, or gun smoke.

3   The Collapse of World Trade Center 7.

The 47-story World Trade Center 7 (above, left), also known as the Saloman Brothers Building, was designed by Emory Roth and Sons and was completed in 1987.  The Columbia Center in Seattle (not shown) is the largest building on the west coast of North America with a floor area of 1.5 million square feet.  WTC7 had a floor area of 1.8 million square feet.  Tenants of WTC7 included the Defense Department, the CIA, the NYC Office of Emergency Management, the IRS, the SEC (said to have permanently lost 3000 to 4000 files of classified investigations because of the collapse), the Secret Service, and several of Wall Street's most prestigious financial firms.  Between WTC7 and WTC1 was another building (WTC6), a street (Vesey), and a distance of 300'.  It is doubtful that WTC7 was within the debris field of the collapsing towers 1 and 2, which, as everyone knows, also fell straight down.

(above, right) The upper photo shows the small and isolated office fires inside WTC7.  These fires allegedly caused the structural failure of WTC7 on 9/11.  It collapsed completely and suddenly, straight down, a collapse that requires the simultaneous and coordinated failure of all vertical components of the structural system, including the elevator core constructed of steel and a lot of concrete. The lower photo was taken on 9 February 2009 when the 34-story steel-framed Television Cultural Center (CCTV) in Beijing burned ferociously for five hours from bottom to top, inside and out.  The massive fire, thousands of times larger and hotter than the fires in WTC7, lit up the city of Beijing.  Not only did the building not collapse, but, according to the architect, Rem Koolhouse: "They are simply rebuilding it as it was because there was no structural damage."

Jane Stanley (left), a reporter for the BBC, announces the collapse of WTC7 twenty minutes before its collapse. WTC7, the massive building immediately to the right of Jane's head, is neither collapsed nor consumed by fire; it shows no sign of structural failure or imminent collapse.  Both the BBC and CNN announced the collapse of WTC7 just prior to its collapse. Given that, in the entire history of construction, no high-rise building has ever collapsed due to fire, their knowledge of the imminent collapse of WTC7 seems absolutely incriminating. Both networks acknowledge their announcement but understandably neither network is interested in discussing it.

Quote.  Danny Jowenko (left), Dutch controlled-demolition contractor (speaking of WTC7): "Does the top go first?  No, the bottom.  It starts on the bottom.  They simply blew up the columns and the rest caved in afterwards.  [You're sure?]  Absolutely, it's been imploded. This was a hired job.  A team of experts did this."  (Danny Jowenko died in July 2011 when, driving home from church, his car inexplicably crashed into a tree.)

Quote.  Craig Bartmer, NY Police Officer, one of the 911 first responders (speaking of WTC7):  "Somebody grabbed my shoulder and I started running, and the shit's hitting the ground behind me, and the whole time you're hearing boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.  I think I know an explosion when I hear it.  There's no way that that just fell down on its own, I don't believe it."

Quote.  Larry Silverstein (below), owner of buildings 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 (speaking of WTC7):  "I remember getting a call from the, er, fire department commander, telling me that they were not sure they were gonna be able to contain the fire, and I said, 'We've had such terrible loss of life, maybe the smartest thing to do is pull it.'  And they made that decision to pull and we watched the building collapse."
